First of all, thank you for visit to this blog. As I work towards transitioning towards a product management role, the first step is to understand what skills are crucial for someone to be a product manager.
There are two part of skill recognition. First, identify which skills you have that are transferrable to product management; and second, which skills you need to learn.
Below is a list of skills that I have so far recognized as ‘necessary for product management’. Later, one can identify which skills they already have and which skills they may need to learn.
Skill 1 – Being Curious
This is probably the most important skill for a product manager. I have heard this in various training sessions, individual conversations and blogs/articles that I have read on product management.
Merrium Webster Dictionary defines curious as someone marked by desire to investigate and learn.
When one starts questioning how things works or why things are the way they are – we call them curious. The drive to dive deep into the behavioral patterns of users, the unspoken needs of the market, understanding the true reasons behind a customer action, etc. lead someone to develop the product sense. Once they start with the first principles, and the why behind anything and everything – the first step towards being a product manager is taken.
